380 Caliber Pistols - Springfield Armory has introduced one of the neatest, most compact, and most useful .380 ACP handguns of the last decade. That's a bold statement, but it's a fine handgun that many shooters are sure to enjoy. I usually include a data sheet at the end of the report, but the size of the 911 is one of the most interesting things, so I'll talk about the size first.
This .380 ACP pistol weighs just 12.6 ounces and is just 5.5 inches long. The 911 is a single-action pistol that functions like a 1911, with a few differences worth noting. Anyone familiar with 1911 9mm or .45 personal defense can handle the pistol right off the bat, but there are differences.

The 911 single-action trigger breaks at 6.1 pounds, which has the advantage of light shooting ability. (There are reviews from people who haven't handled and certainly haven't fired the pistol that say the trigger is lighter. Let's be real and meet the author halfway based on our own experience.) Yes The pistol is available with six. -round recessed magazine and a seven-sheet extended magazine.
Review: Springfield 911 .380 Acp
The pistol is a bit easier to shoot well with the extended magazine. You must carry a concealed weapon. This is harder for some than others based on personal preference and body type. No one should have a problem with a Springfield 911 with a properly designed case. No weapons are covered. You're actually hiding from casual observation, not frisc or the like.
For many of us, 9mm is the default, so think twice before choosing a smaller caliber. This means that if the enemy is motivated by profit and doesn't want to be shot, the .380 is as good a deterrent as any -- as long as you can see the "shot" in their eyes.
Some people find the 911 a great carry gun, I think it's a perfect backup pistol. Personal opinion should not interfere with an honest assessment. I like the .45 Commander better, but the 911 .380 has a lot of merit. Springfield Armory has been producing reliable concealed handguns for many years in addition to their full size and competition quality pistols. XDS and EMP are among them.
The 911 .380 is smaller than the others and is the company's first .380 ACP pistol. The pistol looks more like the SIG P238 and less like the RIA Baby Rock. The fit and finish is better than the ATR gun and at least comparable to the SIG. The gun has evolved quite a bit and I'm finding things I really like.
Naa Guardian: A Sturdy, Little Pocket Pistol
Small, high-quality handguns in .380 ACP caliber sometimes bite the hand web. The Walther PPK is famous for this in its early performances. The .380 ACP may be a small caliber, but it packs plenty of punch in a pistol under 20 ounces. The long grip of the Springfield 911 makes it virtually impossible to slide the slide through the web of the hand.
There is no grip safety, so this is not a true 1911, but there is a thumb safety. The gun can be brought hammer down on a loaded or cocked chamber with the safety engaged. This is not a pull-up carry because the slide is not closed by the safety. Wind up mode should only be used with a case. I usually don't recommend thumb-up on single-action pistols because the piece is pulled, but on a small automatic like the 911, the gearing is such that thumb-up is easy.
Another difference in safety compared to the 1911 pistol is that the slide can be moved with the safety. You cannot do this with the Colt 1903 and 1908 small pistols or the 1911, meaning you can safely load the pistol. The safety is slightly larger than the smaller competing 1911s, which I consider an improvement. Security is two-handed.
The grip is a G10 design from our leading grip manufacturer, Hogue. They did very well. The design provides good wear and adhesion during firing. The front strap is also rough for a good grip.
Is A .380 Good For Self Defense In 2023?
The pistol borrows the loaded chamber indicator from the XD series. The pistol is available with a black nitride or stainless slide. The frame is anodized aluminum. The gun has a full length guide rod.
The barrel is only 2.7 inches long. This is good; The .380 ACP uses a small amount of fast-burning powder. Velocity was relatively high even compared to longer barreled .380 ACP handguns. The Hornady Critical Defense broke at 890 fps, and the 90-grain Hornady XPT broke at 901 fps.
It was fashionable when the new wave of ultra-compact .380 pistols were introduced to show the pistol alongside a Colt 1908 .380 ACP and point out that the new technology made it possible to carry a much smaller pistol. Same cartridge. That's true, but the 1903 is an easy-to-shoot gun that's effective out to 25 yards. The 911 is small but has a single action trigger and very good sights. These sights allow for good accuracy. Small handguns with short ranges and light weight need good sights. A night sight is provided for the 911. Self-illuminating tritium sights allow for 24-hour capacity. I really like these sights and think anyone who uses the gun for personal defense will appreciate them.
I dry-fired the piece to acclimatize it. I have average hands and the pistol took a bit of finger twisting and movement to get used to, but I was able to shoot full grip with the magazine extended. Pistol shooting was interesting. Kicking a light .380 isn't enough to hurt, but there was momentum shooting a 13-ounce pistol.

The SF 911 compared to the RIA Baby Rock .380 above and the Smith and Wesson snubnose .38 M442. This is a compact pistol.
Most surprising was the accuracy potential. The pistol hits the target quickly and naturally, thanks to the low-bore shaft and the well-designed grip. When shooting, it is important to focus on the proper alignment of the gun. I fired 100 Fiocchi 95 grain FMJs as fast as I could load the magazines. The magazines are easy to load and have no sharp edges. The pistol performed well and was accurate enough to hold shots in the X range at 5, 7, and 10 yards. I even released it from the holding position to test its operation. The function was excellent.
Moving on to defensive loads, I loaded the Hornady American Gunner load. Loaded in affordable 75-round boxes, the American Gunner load is affordable for the JHP. He fed, made a room, was released, and generally released. Accurate shooting from 15 yards, multiple 2-inch 5-shot groups are fired from a fixed barricade. This gun was an excellent performer.
The main advantage of the Springfield 911 is that its transport does not cause any inconvenience. This means it should be with you when you need it. In terms of shooting and handling, there was no shortage and full attention to detail was given in the design.

The downside is the color. I see comments from people who should know better, don't know better, or have some agenda recommending the .380 ACP. This is bad. The .380 doesn't perform as well as the .38 Special or the 9mm Luger - only if the physics were reversed. The bottom line is not what I recommend for personal protection.
So-called studies with questionable methodology and questionable sources have no validity. The professional gelatin test shows the wound potential of the cartridge. The wound canal can be saved by casting it in gelatin, and the neck, fissures, and terminal expansion are well preserved. .380 ACP is not the same as 9mm or .38, and not even close. The primary deficiency comes in the form of expansion and penetration. Some loads are better than others. A few fragments in 3-4 inches of gelatin. This is a dangerous short penetration. I have often said that if a small standard outperforms expectations, it is due to good penetration. This means avoiding trick bullets and choosing loads with good penetration. Hornady XTP, Hornady Critical Defense, and Fiocchi 90-grain XTP loads are viable options.
The Springfield 911 is well made, accurate, reliable and easy to operate. This is a handgun that will always be with you. Concealed handguns seem to want that the most. It comes with a neat carrying case, two magazines, a zipped bag and a pocket case.
