380 caliber pistol

380 Caliber Pistol - Ruger LCP MAX .380 ACP This lightweight, easy-to-conceal .380 ACP pistol features realistic magazine capacity, effective sights, and a sturdy trigger.

Compared to the author's personal EDC rifle, the Ruger LCP MAX .380 ACP is remarkably small and light.

When I started carrying concealed handguns regularly in 1996, I had no idea that concealed carry weapons would become a major topic in gun magazines and online media, but times have changed. As an instructor who teaches a wide spectrum, I see more interest in covert defense training than all others combined.

Concealed carry is a hot topic in the market, which is expected to grow by 13.7 percent in 2021. The firearms industry has jumped at the opportunity and we are constantly seeing new and better guns for the concealed carry market. Over the past three years, almost every major handgun manufacturer has introduced a new compact, high-capacity handgun. Some have more than one, such as Ruger introducing two new designs in late 2021.

I do it with two 12 round magazines and one in the chamber which allows 25 rounds in a light package.

In 1996, when my home state of North Carolina legalized concealed carry, the most likely concealed handgun was a small, light, five-shot revolver. The lightest of these rifles, the Smith & Wesson Airweights, weigh about 14 ounces and are chambered in .38 Special. The standard load is a 158-grain bullet that delivers energy approximately 200 feet. +P, loaded with a 125-grain bullet, which increased the weight to about 250 foot-pounds, both from a four-inch barrel. It will be cheaper with a two-inch (or shorter) barrel, which most rifles have.

The .380 ACP was introduced in 1908, and at the time only metal cased ammunition was considered practical. My favorite .380 ACP pistol is the Walther PPK and rifles of similar size and weight. The PPK has a six-round magazine capacity and weighs 19 ounces, making it heavier and less powerful than the lightweight .38 Spl. revolver. For most .38 Spl. a revolver seemed the better choice.

At a whopping 25 rounds, the Ruger LCP MAX is lighter than the P365 we carry every day.

At the time I carried the .38 Spl., I found the .380 ACP cartridge substandard for defense, even though the former was simply better than the latter. The only casualty is the all-metal casing of the .380 ammo, and it's negligible for penetrating heavy clothing, and there's zero expansion. In .38 Spl. The 158 grain round, which was never police standard, is no better, I carry a +P 125 grain hollow point. Times have changed and defensive ammunition has grown.

Now that the hottest part of the firearms market remains shrouded in mystery, ammunition companies have put a lot of effort into improving performance. Modern ammunition like the Federal HST is a completely different proposition. Is a .380 ACP loaded with state-of-the-art ammunition as effective as the same load in a 9mm Luger? No, but it works in many smaller, lighter and easier to conceal guns, and it's better than the standard .38 Spl. open once standards for law enforcement agencies.

Until recently, Super-small .380 Autos had no magazine capacity. The most commonly used six-round magazine has poor or almost no scope and is difficult to shoot well. Now that's changed—now that's changed

All 10-ounce .380s are a bit fast, but for such a small and light gun, recoil really does the trick with the Ruger LCP MAX.

The small, high-powered 9mm pistols introduced in the past few years have been dubbed the “Wonder Nine” because they check all the boxes for concealed carry pistols. Almost every major handgun maker now has high-powered 9mm pistols, along with two new guns from companies that haven't even made a handgun in nearly a century—Mossberg and Savage.

While I like the new Ruger MAX 9, I was surprised by the Ruger LCP MAX ($469, ruger.com). Since its introduction, I've said that the LCP II is the best of the .380 micros, but the LCP MAX creates a whole new category with its excellent sights and trigger coupled with magazine capacity that puts it in the Magic class. The standard capacity is 10 cartridges, there is an additional magazine for 12 cartridges.

Ease of shooting, large scopes, ample trigger pull, larger grip area, and additional capacity make the Ruger LCP MAX Micro a reliable .380 cartridge.

Despite its dual magazine capacity, the Ruger LCP MAX is only 0.81 inches wide and weighs less than 11 ounces. With a 10-round magazine, it is only slightly larger than the LCP II, but nearly doubles the magazine capacity. Adding a little width and about half an inch to the handle makes it surprisingly more comfortable. The LCP Max really comes into its own with the optional 12-round magazine, which provides a comfortable grip that gives my little finger a solid foothold.

Trigger pull is good, it breaks at about six pounds; movement is low, but it's a good trigger for personal defense. The blade trigger is similar to that of a striker-fired rifle, although all LCP rifles are striker-fired. I don't learn to take from reset. I find that most shooters get better results by pulling the trigger and regaining pressure on the wall during recoil, but for the interest of those who do, the Reset is pretty short. A further improvement is a better extractor. I would prefer the ejection port to be a bit longer. If the bolt is not clamped enthusiastically, the loaded cartridge tends to catch on the front of the port when cleaning the rifle. Additionally, there is a camera window that loads through the ejection port.

The dovetail sights use the Glock dovetail profile and, surprisingly for such a small gun, are large enough for quick detection but small enough for easy concealment. In front of the rear sight is a collapsible surface, and the HiViz front sight inserts Tritium in a white contoured circle.

The Ruger LCP MAX .380 ACP can train defense like a larger 9mm pistol.

Shooting the Ruger LCP MAX feels like shooting a larger gun. The grip is more rounded than the Ruger LCP II, and the 12-round magazine gives room for three fingers. The dots on the LCP MAX pen are a little lighter than I like, but still nice. Despite the light weight, recoil is lighter than the smaller .380s due to the grip.

I have a standard 16 round qualification used for defensive shooter training. It consists of shooting from the strong and supporting hand at close range, changing the magazine, four shots in a short time and two shots every seven and 10 meters. I use a scaled-down BLEA target with a two-by-three-inch 10-ring. Shooting defensive ammo makes it easy to hit the time limit, and I scored over 98 percent in all runs, with one run of 99.4 percent. In short, the Ruger LCP MAX is an excellent pistol that shoots well despite its small size.

Easy removal, remove pin and slide forward. The double spring return spring is really small.

Disassembling the Ruger LCP MAX .380 ACP requires removing the pin and extending it without touching the trigger. Spring return is not taken into account. It's simple, but you have to remove the pin. I believe the lever release system is not used for simplicity and weight reduction.

The result is a small, lightweight, easy-to-conceal pistol with real magazine capacity, usable sights, and an acceptable trigger. The Ruger LCP MAX is so good that I'd be surprised if other companies weren't working on a high-powered micro .380 by the time I write this. I am applying for a term
