380 Caliber Handgun - Ruger LCP MAX .380 ACP This lightweight and easy-to-conceal .380 ACP pistol has the right magazine capacity, effective sights and a powerful trigger.

Compared to the author's personal EDC pistol, the Ruger LCP MAX .380 ACP is remarkably small and light.

When I started carrying a concealed carry pistol regularly in 1996, I had no idea that concealed carry weapons would become a major topic in gun magazines and online media, but times have changed. As a coach who teaches at the broad level, I see more interest in defensive stealth coaching than anything else combined.

Concealed carry is a hot topic in a market that has seen a 13.7 percent increase in 2021. The firearms industry has seen an opportunity and we are constantly seeing new and better guns being introduced to the concealed carry market. Almost every major handgun manufacturer has introduced a new high-capacity compact pistol in the past three years. Some are more than one, like Ruger, which introduced two new designs in late 2021.

My carry method was two 12 round magazines and one chambered, allowing 25 rounds in a light pack.

In 1996, when the states of North Carolina legalized concealed carry, the concealed carry gun was likely to be a small, lightweight, five-shot cylinder handgun. The lightest of these rifles, the Smith & Wesson Airweights, weighed about 14 ounces and were chambered in .38 Special. The standard load was a 158-grain bullet that delivered about 200 pounds of energy. +P loads with a 125-grain bullet increased the proportion to about 250 pounds, both from four-inch barrels. This would be much less with the two inch barrels (or shorter) of most carry guns.

The .380 ACP was introduced in 1908, at the time only all-metal ammunition was considered practical. The most popular .380 ACP pistol was the Walther PPK and rifles of similar size and weight. The PPK had a magazine capacity of six rounds and weighed 19 ounces, making it heavier and less powerful than the lightweight .38 Spl. gunmen. For most, the .38 Spl. A revolver seemed a better choice.

The Ruger LCP MAX, with a full 25 round group, is lighter than my everyday P365 empty load.

While I was carrying the .38 Spl. The .380 ACP round was considered substandard for defensive loads, although the former was only marginally better than the latter. .380 full metal jacket ammo was the only offering, had marginal penetration in heavy clothing and no expansion. .38 Spl. The 158-grain roundnose load that used to be the standard Police load wasn't any better, so I loaded +P 125-grain hollowpoints. Times have changed and defensive ammunition has improved considerably.

Now, with the hottest part of the firearms market under wraps, ammunition companies have put a lot of effort into improving performance. Modern ammunition like the Federal HST is a completely different proposition. Is the 380 ACP loaded with the latest ammo as effective as a similar load in the 9mm Luger? No, but it works in guns that are smaller, lighter, easier to conceal, and better than the standard .38 Spl. Download the one-time standard for law enforcement.

Until now, very small .380 autos lacked magazine capacity. Most of the six-round magazines used had weak or almost non-existent sights and were difficult to shoot well. Now that has changed -- now we have changed

All 10-ounce eights are a bit fast, but for such a small and light rifle, the recoil is remarkably controlled with the Ruger LCP MAX.

The higher-capacity 9mm sub-guns introduced in recent years are called the "Miracle Nines" because they checked all the boxes for a concealed carry pistol. Almost every major pistol manufacturer now has a high-capacity 9mm pistol, with two newer pistols from companies that haven't even made a pistol in almost a century—Mossberg and Savage.

While I love Ruger's new MAX 9, I'm in awe of the Ruger LCP MAX ($469, ruger.com). Since its introduction, the LCP II has been hailed as the best in class precision 380, but the LCP MAX creates a whole new class with impressive sights and trigger combined with magazine capacity that puts it in the wonder category. The standard capacity is 10 bullets, and there is also an extra for 12 bullets.

Easy to shoot, excellent sights, reasonable trigger, more grip area and extra capacity make the Ruger LCP MAX Micro a solid .380.

Despite its dual magazine capacity, the Ruger LCP MAX is only 0.81 inches wide and weighs less than 11 ounces. With a 10-round magazine, it is slightly larger than the LCP II while the magazine capacity is almost doubled. Adding a bit more width and about half an inch to the handles makes it surprisingly more comfortable. The LCP Max really comes into its own with the optional 12-round magazine that allows for a comfortable grip that gives my little finger a firm place.

Trigger pull is good, breaking about six pounds; There's a lot of travel involved, but it's a good motivator for personal defense. The blade trigger looks similar to most percussion rifles, although all LCP rifles fire with a hammer. I don't teach reset shooting. I find that most shooters get better results by releasing the trigger and resetting the pressure wall during recoil, but in favor of those who do, the reset is relatively short. More optimization is a better extractor. I would have preferred a slightly longer ejection port. Unless the slide is fired enthusiastically, the loaded round tends to catch on the front left side as it clears the weapon. In addition, there is a chamber window loaded over the ejection port.

The sights are matched to the Glock dovetail profile in the slide, great for a gun this small, big enough for quick acquisition but small enough for easy concealment. The front of the rear sight has a painting surface and the HiViz front sight is a tritium insert in a white circle.

The Ruger LCP MAX .380 ACP is a capable defensive drill just as good as the larger 9mm pistols.

Walther Ppk/s 380 Acp, Stainless, 2x7rd Mags

Shooting the Ruger LCP MAX feels like a much bigger shooter. The grip is more rounded than the Ruger LCP II, and the 12-round magazine provides room for all three fingers. The dots on the LCP MAX handle are a little lighter than I prefer, but still pretty good. Despite the lighter weight, the recoil is easier to handle than most mini-8s due to the grip it provides.

I have a standard 16 round qualifying game that I use to coach defensive pitchers. It consists of solid marksmanship and support at close range, magazine change, four shots at short range, and two shots at seven and 10 yards. I use a 10" x 2" x 3" BLEA ring-reduced objective. When shooting defensive ammo, it was easy to stick to the time limits, and I scored over 98 percent on all rounds with a single shot of 99.4 percent. In short, the Ruger LCP MAX is a well-rounded gun that is easy to shoot well, despite its compact size.

Removal is easy, remove the pin and the slider moves. The dual return springs are really small.

Disassembling the Ruger LCP MAX .380 ACP requires removing the pin and the slide is ejected without touching the trigger. The return spring is not shown in the manual. It is simple, but requires the removal of the needle. I'm sure the takedown lever system was not used for simplicity and weight reduction.

The result is a compact, lightweight, and easily concealed pistol with the right magazine capacity, truly usable sights, and a reasonable trigger. The Ruger LCP MAX is so good I'd be surprised if other companies weren't working on higher capacity sub-380s as I write this. I request this appointment
