Well, there's a huge variety here, thanks to various specialized firearms developed to take advantage of the exceptionally terminal ballistic 357 Magnum revolver ammunition.

Magnum Recoil: Is It Too Much?
It's the lightest 357, and a true concealed carry revolver from the ground up. 357 Magnum is the best revolver? For personal protection, sure.
It can also carry 38 special ammo which is a big plus in such a small gun. This ultra light 357 snub gives you options for when you don't need to light up the night sky and for more precision and detection control. It also appears in our list of 38 revolvers.
These double action revolvers are an evolution of the Smith & Wesson Model 40 Centennial Airlight, which is based on the classic J-frame revolver we've had since the 1950s.
The S&W Performance Center model weighs 0.74lb all-metal, and is only 6.3 inches long with a 1.875″ barrel. For 357 magnum loads, that's excellent.

Building on the legacy of the Colt Snake Gun, the Colt Python is a modern version of the old six-shooter. It's arguably the most complete weapon out there and is California compliant as well.
The Python is basically a stainless steel pistol with wooden grips and a fluted barrel. Nothing particularly revolutionary then. But not everyone wants innovation.
Most people love the look and feel of the best 357 Magnum revolvers and prefer the classic with some nods to the modern world.
That's kind of it. Since the first python went on sale in 1955, it has been intended for hunting, self-defense and shooting competitions without any mods.

Ruger makes some of the best heavy-barrel handguns in the world. Hunters love them, Alaskans use them for polar bear protection, and even competition shooters around the world love them. The Ruger SP101 and more are less, but the GP100 Standard or Match Champion are both winners.

The S&W Model 686 357 Magnum is based on the S&W medium frame stainless steel pistol and is basically a safer choice. But if you're only buying one, go for the Model 686 357 Magnum.
Smith & Wesson's Model 686 has been around since the 1980s and hasn't changed much for one reason. The new 686 Plus is a fancy way of saying that it is a 7-round cylinder rather than the 6-round version on offer.
