Boone never lived or served in the Tidewater area, and he died in 1974 without having visited the clinic. But he was respected within the Navy medical community and, as one historian will tell you, he had the ability to be present when history was made.

Boone contributed to three wars and served as physician to three presidents. He was the most decorated medic in Navy history and only the second person to receive the Medal of Honor, according to Navy chronicles and historians.

"What better way to dedicate a structure to the medical needs of our great Navy than to name this building after one of America's great patriots - the Navy -," said General Surgeon of the Navy in 1972, Vice Admiral. George Davis, at the inauguration ceremony of the health clinic. "Hopefully the people who occupy this building to manage the healthcare needs of our Navy are qualified, dedicated, empathetic (and) dedicated to the service that calls their name."

Built for $2 million in 1972, the Boone Clinic completed extensive renovations last month, including a new heating, air, sprinkler, and alarm system that cost $3.8 million, the Navy said.

Currently, the clinic offers medical services including primary and emergency care, psychiatry, obstetrics and dentistry for military personnel.

Boone's claim to history began in World War I, when he served as a medic in the 6th Regiment of the Marine Corps.

On July 19, 1918, she ran under heavy enemy fire in an open field to tend to wounded marines near Vierzy, France. He raced back through the fire to restock and repeated the deed later that day. For his bravery, he was awarded the nation's highest honor: the Medal of Honor, the highest of several awards he has earned during his career.

Boone is pictured standing behind General Douglas MacArthur during the Japanese surrender aboard the Missouri in 1945; he led the first medical and safety survey of an American coal mine, resulting in improvements for workers; and he was responsible for the development of a helicopter deck aboard a hospital ship during the Korean War, saving countless lives, historical accounts say.

"Boone seems to have been present when history was being made," said Andre B. Sobocinski, historian for the Bureau of Naval Medicine and Surgery, who is working on a book about Boone. "He easily ranks in the top five most important Navy medics in history."
